2018 WSMA Accredited School LogoMUSIC CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES

NHS Band

The NHS Band is an excellent group of musicians that rehearses each day in preparation for various performances throughout the year. The NHS Concert Band performs at 4 concerts, the WSMA Concert Festival and graduation each year. It has earned Excellent (I) ratings at the WSMA Large Group Festival 23 of the past 24 years. The NHS Marching Tigers perform at the Bayfield Apple Festival Parade, the KBJR Christmas City of the North Parade and the NHS Homecoming Game each fall. The NHS Pep Band performs at all home football games and most home basketball games (the NHS D.J.Club provide musical entertainment at some games). The NHS Pep Band has traveled various times to support the Boys Football, Boys Basketball and Girls Basketball teams. The students work hard to be an excellent example of Northwestern High School.

NHS Concert Choir

The Northwestern High School Concert Choir is an outstanding group of musicians that rehearses daily for 45 minutes and performs on the four NHS concerts throughout the year as well as at concert festivals and our graduation ceremonies. Known for high achievement, the NHS Concert Choir has consistently received I (Excellent) ratings performing Class A literature at WSMA Concert Festivals. While most members sang in the middle school choirs, prior membership is not required.  The concert choir has toured locally and has been part of extended tours to Florida, New York, Hollywood, the Bahamas,  Washington DC, and most recently in 2019, Hawaii.

Chamber Singers

Chamber Singer members are members of the Concert Choir who rehearse at various times. The group sings challenging music for a small ensemble. They perform at several concerts and community functions throughout the district, and they participate in the spring Solo and Ensemble competition. This (mostly) acappella ensemble sings anything from medieval chant to vocal jazz!

NHS Jazz Band

The NHS Jazz Band rehearses during the school day in preparations for their performances. They perform at the NHS Java Jive and the NHS Coffee House Concert each school year. The focus of the NHS Jazz Band is to learn the swing style associated with big bands led by jazz greats Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

Tiger Beat - NHS Show Choir

Tiger Beat, the NHS Show Choir is an auditioned group formed from the concert choir. The ensemble performs mostly pop and show tunes and adds choreography. Practices are scheduled both during the school day and after school. The group performs at various concerts throughout the year and for different community functions and performs at the spring Solo and Ensemble competition. Often, a rhythm section of piano, drums, electric guitar and bass guitar are used to accompany the group.

Musical

The NHS Musical is a co-curricular activity which involves many students at NHS. There are stage performers, stage crew members, light and sound crew, and the pit band. Much time before and after school is spent to make this activity a great success. Recent productions include: Cinderella, The King and I, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, and The Little Mermaid. Productions take place in February in our beautiful facility, the Patricia Luostari Theatre for the Performing Arts.

DJ Club

The NHS DJ Club provides music at high school and middle school dances as well as various athletic events. Any student is welcome to join and be a member of the NHS DJ Club

Color Guard

The NHS Color Guard works to provide a visual accent to the marching bands parade performances. It rehearses before school and is open to any NHS student.
