NORTHWESTERN HS

Welcome to NHS!!

We are a comprehensive high school of approximately 450 students with a building staff of 60+ individuals committed to providing the best possible learning environment for our students to learn and grow. Our academic programming is rigorous and covers a broad spectrum, led by a teaching faculty of which 64% hold a masters degree or higher.

We offer a broad range of courses in both the core curricular and the CTE [vocational] areas designed to prepare our students for the rigors of college as well as direct training for careers in the trades. NHS is in the early stages of expanding the curricular choices provided to our students, including on-line, AP,  as well as concurrent and dual-credit course offerings that will enable our students to gain college-level experience and credit for high school courses. Students can earn vocational training in fully equipped woods and metal fabrication labs that includes such equipment as CNC machinery and hands-on experience in building construction. Our fine arts department provides students with excellent experiences ranging from the visual to the dramatic arts. NHS students have the unique opportunity to participate in numerous bands, vocal groups and drama productions…all performing in a state-of-the-art auditorium with professional sound, light and stage systems. Our special education and academic assistance departments serve a diverse population and are committed to preparing our students for life beyond high school with a variety of transitionary experiences and opportunities.

Our Board of Education has made the commitment to providing our students with easy access to the world of knowledge and information by investing in a blend of designated and mobile computer labs. We are a “Google” school, which means our staff and students make extensive use of cloud-based applications that provide our students with the types of experiences they will need in college and the world of work.

Athletically, we are a proud member of the Heart ‘O North Conference, offering our students opportunities to participate and compete in 13 different sports at the interscholastic level. NHS sponsors a variety of nationally associated clubs such as DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, Quiz Bowl and FFA as well as “student-initiated” clubs such as  Paranormal Activity, Muggles [ala Harry Potter], Yoga, Cross-Country Skiing, and Drama.  Our students consistently compete at a high level and are seen representing NHS and our community at the state level on a regular basis.

I am extremely proud of our high school! We are nestled in the beautiful Wisconsin Northwoods in a building over-looking Lake Superior that has recently undergone a multi-million dollar renovation that expanded our classroom, athletic and fine arts areas to state-of-the-art status. Please take some time to browse around this site and enjoy the information we provide here. Of course, you are always welcome to visit us "in person”.  Our door is always open to visitors and we would love to have the chance to show you around our school and talk with you about what we have to offer. Northwestern High School is a special place where leaders and learners work together each day to prepare for tomorrow.
