School Bus Safety

Regrettably, many cars and other vehicles drive past stopped school buses when they are supposed to stop. In the majority of cases, this is due to ignorance of the laws, rather than aggressive driving.

This is a very dangerous practice and puts the lives of our children at risk.

Most drivers are only told about the rules for passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights only when they learn to drive - often many years ago. We would like to request the help of the media in reminding all drivers the safe practices when school buses are stopped with yellow or red lights flashing.

  1. When you see a school bus, assume children will be around and take extra care - leave lots of space around the bus.
  2. When the bus turns on the yellow flashing lights - this means it is about to stop either at a railroad crossing or to pick up kids. Slow down and prepare to stop.
  3. When the bus turns on the red flashing lights - this means STOP in BOTH directions. Never pass a school bus with red flashing lights in either direction. Stop well back from the bus. If you have any doubt what to do - STOP.

Video Highlights The School District of Maple

This video is a part of a local effort to encourage people moving to the area to choose The School District of Maple as their home.

Safety Measures

All doors, including the main entrances to the elementary, middle, and high school buildings are now locked and equipped with video surveillance cameras, intercoms, and buzzer systems to provide a controlled entry during regular school hours.

Authorization is required to enter into the school buildings during the regular hours of operation as visitor management is a vital component of building safety through access control. If you are planning on visiting a school in the District, you can alert office staff by pressing the intercom button located at the main entrance of each school building. The office will verify your identity and then allow entry to the building.

School safety has received a tremendous amount of attention over the past several months. Your patience and cooperation during this period of transition in our efforts to provide safer school environments is greatly appreciated.

Attendance Policy

The past practice of having your son or daughter bring a note to school when they return after an illness or vacation or calling later in the day or even the next day to let the office know of an absence will not follow our attendance procedures this year.

  • If you have a son or daughter that will not be attending school due to illness, we will be requiring a phone call, e-mail or fax to the appropriate school before the school day starts as listed below. When and if parent verification is not made, your son or daughter will be considered unexcused. Any unexcused (partial or all of the school day) will prevent your son or daughter from participating in after school activities. If your son or daughter is ill for more than one day, a parent phone call needs to be made before school starts for EACH day your son or daughter will be absent. There is voice message available 24 hours a day at every school so if you have a sick child in the evening or early morning you can call, e-mail or fax something then, in advance, for the next day.
  • The other change to the attendance policy concerns dentist, doctor, orthodontist, etc. appointments. Starting this year, verification of those appointments will be required. They can be in the form of a card from their office or you can arrange for their office staff to fax us the verification of the appointment.

The above two changes to the attendance policy were approved by the school board this summer and will apply to both elementary schools, middle school, and the high school. If you have any questions or concerns about these two changes, please call the appropriate school building principal
